West Central Railway has awarded Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) a Rs. 169.48 crore contract for designing, supplying, erecting, and commissioning a 220/132kV/2X25 kV Scott-connected Traction Sub Station, switching posts, and SCADA works between Bina and RTA in Bhopal Division. The project supports the 3000MT loading target within 540 days.
Introduction:
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has been chosen as the lower bidder by West Central Railway for a substantial contract for traction system and SCADA work, aiming at reinforcing traction power infrastructure to meet growing freight demands. The project involves design, modification, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of a 220/132kV/2X25 kV Scott-connected Traction Sub Station (TSS), along with associated switching posts and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
The work covers the Bina to RTA stretch in the Bhopal Division and directly supports Indian Railways’ target of handling 3000 metric tonnes (MT) of freight loading. The overall project worth Rs. 169.48 crore is scheduled to be completed within 540 days.
Scope of Work:
- Traction Substation Development: Establishment and commissioning of a 220/132kV/2X25 kV Scott-connected TSS to strengthen the power supply backbone.
- Switching Posts: Installation of auxiliary switching posts for reliable power distribution.
- SCADA Integration: Incorporation of SCADA systems for advanced monitoring, control, and automation.
- End-to-End Execution: Comprehensive coverage from design and modification to final commissioning.
This integrated package will enhance power reliability, operational efficiency, and the overall carrying capacity of the Bhopal Division’s critical freight corridors.
Significance of the Project:
The Bina–RTA section forms a key freight corridor under West Central Railway, handling heavy traffic volumes. The new traction substation will:
- Improve Power Reliability: By deploying the Scott-connected configuration, power balancing and voltage stability will be optimized.
- Enable Higher Freight Loading: Directly contributes to achieving the 3000MT target by ensuring uninterrupted traction power.
- Enhance Efficiency: SCADA integration reduces downtime, ensures faster fault detection, and enables real-time monitoring.
- Support Modernization Goals: Aligns with Indian Railways’ mission of upgrading power systems for both freight and passenger operations.
Strategic Implications:
RVNL’s role in this project highlights its consistent presence in delivering mission-critical infrastructure for Indian Railways. By securing this contract, RVNL not only strengthens its portfolio in power and traction projects but also positions itself as a key enabler of energy-efficient and high-capacity rail operations.
The West Central Railway, through this decision, is addressing the dual need of handling freight growth while upgrading power systems. With rising demand in both freight and passenger transport, such projects lay the foundation for sustainable and reliable operations in the long term.
Conclusion:
The recent order awarded to RVNL is a crucial move towards West Central Railway’s capacity enhancement drive. By deploying advanced traction substations and SCADA systems, the project will enhance efficiency, provide reliable power, and enable the Bhopal Division to meet its ambitious 3000MT freight target.
