RailTel bags Rs. 264 crore contract for Kavach deployment across 607 RKm in East Central Railway

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. has bagged a Rs. 264 crore contract from East Central Railway to implement Kavach, the indigenous Train Collision Avoidance System, across 607 Route Kilometers (RKm) of low-density railway track. The project aims to boost rail safety and is expected to be completed by July 14, 2027.

Introduction:

In a major step towards improving train safety, RailTel secured a Kavach deployment contract from the East Central Railway (ECR). The order worth Rs. 264 crore includes the implementation of the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) across 607 Route Kilometers (RKm) of low-density railway track. The project aims to improve railway safety and focuses on indigenous technology.

The order reaffirms Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring safety even on non-busy corridors.

Project Details:

  • Scope: Provision of Kavach across 607 RKm
  • Corridor Type: Low-density railway lines
  • Contract Value: Rs. 2,64,06,97,427
  • Completion Deadline: 14th July 2027

About Kavach:

Kavach is a cutting-edge indigenous safety technology engineered to prevent train collisions, ensure automatic braking in case of signal violations, and maintain safe distance between trains. Developed in collaboration with Indian Railways’ R&D arms, Kavach aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ goal by supporting local innovation.

Some key features include:

  • Automatic braking in case of danger or human error
  • Prevention of signal passing at danger (SPAD)
  • Continuous speed monitoring and train control
  • Bi-directional communication between trains and station systems

Strategic Importance for East Central Railway:

East Central Railway covers vital railway divisions including Danapur, Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, Samastipur, and Sonpur. The deployment of Kavach in this zone’s low-density tracks is especially important, as it–

  • Expands safety infrastructure beyond high-density corridors
  • Protects freight and passenger trains on lesser-used routes
  • Reinforces a pan-network approach to zero-accident goals

RailTel’s Growing Role in Railway Modernisation:

RailTel, a PSU under the Ministry of Railways, continues to expand its role from telecom services to key safety and signaling projects. With a strong digital infrastructure backbone, RailTel is uniquely positioned to deliver integrated solutions like Kavach that needs high-reliability networks and real-time response systems.

This project is proof of RailTel’s growing portfolio of digital railway infrastructure initiatives, following recent developments in station Wi-Fi networks, data centers, and IoT-based applications for Indian Railways.

Conclusion:

RailTel’s Kavach implementation project in East Central Railway is a timely and strategic initiative that reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to safety across all corridors. With indigenous technology, focused implementation, and a high-value contract, this step promises to make train travel safer and more resilient even on low-density tracks.
