Pune Metro line-3 unveils first look of modern train design, advancing urban mobility

Pune Metro Line-3 has officially revealed the first look of its metro trains for the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor. With a smart design, the metro train marks a milestone in the project’s advancement following successful trial runs. Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) aims to transform city commuting, significantly reducing travel time and accelerates Smart City mobility goals.

Introduction:

In a major move towards advanced urban mobility, the Pune Metro Line-3 project showed the first look of its new metro train on August 8, 2025. The trains will operate along the highly anticipated Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar corridor. The dynamic and futuristic design of the metro train aligns with the aspirations of a fast-developing Pune.

A Milestone in Pune’s Urban Transit Evolution:

The unveiling follows the successful completion of two trial runs, further reinforcing confidence in the project’s timely execution and operational readiness. The new train sets sport a vibrant and sleek livery that not only grabs attention but also embodies the spirit of a future-ready, technology-driven city.

This corridor is particularly vital as it connects the city’s major IT hub in Hinjawadi with the central business district of Shivajinagar, serving thousands of daily commuters including professionals, students, and residents.

Overview of Pune Metro Rail Project:

The Pune Metro Rail Project was jointly sanctioned by the Government of India (GoI) and the Government of Maharashtra (GoM) in December 2016. The foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on December 24, 2016, and physical work began on May 3, 2017.

The project is being implemented in phases, with two primary corridors:

  • North–South Corridor (Purple Line)
  • East–West Corridor (Aqua Line)

Together, they span a total of 33.2 kilometers, including 30 stations.

  • Elevated Track: 27.2 km
  • Underground Track: 6 km

To support operations, two maintenance depots have been established at Range Hills and Vanaz.

When fully functional, 34 three-coach trains will operate across the network, significantly boosting public transport capacity in the city.

Smart Mobility Benefits:

Pune Metro is more than just a mass transit project—it’s an enabler of efficient, safe, and sustainable urban living. The metro is expected to:

  • Reduce travel time by up to 75%
  • Offer comfortable and congestion-free travel
  • Benefit working professionals, students, and daily commuters
  • Integrate seamlessly with the Smart City infrastructure

Its development strengthens Pune’s public transport backbone, enabling better last-mile connectivity and reducing dependence on personal vehicles, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.

Conclusion:

The first look Pune Metro Line-3 underscores the city’s commitment towards urban development. With modern trains, smart design, and better connectivity, the metro is expected to transform how Pune commutes. As metro infrastructure advances swiftly, citizens get access to safer, faster, and greener journeys across the city.
