PM Modi inaugurates India’s first vertical lift New Pamban rail-cum-sea bridge in Tamil Nadu

In a historic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the iconic New Pamban Rail Bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, this marked India’s first vertical lift sea bridge. Built at a cost of Rs. 700 crore, this engineering achievement features dual rail tracks, a 72.5-metre vertical lift span, and cutting-edge corrosion-resistant materials to ensure durability and longevity.


Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu:

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated several railway projects to the nation in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the New Pamban Rail Bridge, India’s first vertical lift sea bridge, which connects Rameswaram to the mainland. He also flagged off the new Rameswaram–Tambaram (Chennai) train service and a ship, witnessing the bridge’s vertical lift operation from the road bridge above.

Brief Information on Bridge:

  • The new bridge, constructed at an estimated cost of over Rs. 700 crore, extends 2.08 kilometres and features 99 spans.
  • Its centerpiece is a 72.5-metre vertical lift span, capable of rising to a height of 17 metres, allowing ships to pass while ensuring uninterrupted rail traffic.
  • Designed with future capacity in mind, the bridge supports dual rail tracks and incorporates advanced engineering features.
  • It is built with stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, and high-grade protective paint for enhanced strength.
  • A special polysiloxane coating protects it from corrosion, making it well-suited to the demanding marine environment and reducing long-term maintenance.

PM in Sri Lanka:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, along with Sri Lankan President H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, inaugurated two key railway projects in Anuradhapura, supported by Indian assistance.
  • These include the 128 km Maho-Omanthai railway line, refurbished with USD 91.27 million, and the launch of an advanced signaling system from Maho to Anuradhapura with a USD 14.89 million grant. These projects mark a major step in enhancing north-south rail connectivity in Sri Lanka.
