Namo Bharat Corridor: NCRTC completes trial run between Sarai Kale Khan–Modipuram stations

NCRTC has successfully conducted a trial run of the Namo Bharat train on the 82-km Delhi–Meerut RRTS corridor. The train was running at a speed of 160 kmph, it travels from Sarai Kale Khan to Modipuram within one hour. This is a significant accomplishment that makes the RRTS corridor one step closer to operational readiness.

Introduction:

Representing a major stride towards successful operation of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has successfully completed a full trial run of the Namo Bharat train service. The train travelled from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, even with the stoppage at all the stations the total distance was travelled within one hour of a time.

The trial in itself proves that the Namo Bharat train is ready for commercial operation. The achievement showcases all the advanced technologies and precise strategy that NCRTC used are perfect. This aligns with NCRTC’s goal of providing safe, fast, and green mobility.

Highlights from the Trial:

  • The speed of the Namo Bharat train was 160 kmph.
  • Between Sarai Kale Khan and Modipuram there are a total of 25 stations, the train stops at each one during the trial run.
  • The plan was that the journey should be completed within one hour, the trial was successful as it takes less than one hour to run at the 82 km section. It showcases the travel time accuracy that NCRTC has with its strategic planning.
  • The trial was conducted at the same time as the Meerut metro was travelling, there were no operational issues due to the dual transit travel which shows the compatibility and inclusiveness of the mobility.

Technological Excellence:

ETCS Level 3 Hybrid signalling over an LTE backbone was used in Namo Bharat corridors; it is a first-of-its-kind implementation nationwide. This technology ensures train management and efficient train operations, it is suitable for high-speed and high-frequency train travel.

Additionally, the Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) installed at every station functioned efficiently during the trial. These PSDs improve safety and energy efficiency and help maintain an air-conditioned environment within the stations.

The successful integration of both signalling and PSD systems during the run showcases NCRTC’s commitment to top-notch rail infrastructure and cutting-edge safety and operational technologies.

Importance of the Corridor:

The Delhi–Meerut RRTS is India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail project and is being developed with the goal of minimising travel time between major urban centres, accelerating regional economic activity, and providing a sustainable option to road transport.

The successful trial highlights the near completion of the full corridor and makes it capable of going beyond the operational 17-km Priority Section.

Progress of Remaining RRTS Corridor Sections:

Currently, 55 km of the RRTS corridor with 11 stations is operational. Trial runs are advancing on the remaining 4.5 km in Delhi and 23 km in Meerut. The Meerut Metro trials mark India’s first integrated infrastructure with Namo Bharat trains. The 23-km stretch consists of 13 stations, with 18 km elevated and 5 km underground.

Conclusion:

The successful trial of Namo Bharat trains across the entire RRTS corridor showcases a game changing moment in India’s transport landscape. With high-speed, punctual performance and seamless technology integration, NCRTC is set to accelerate regional connectivity, improving quality of life and economic synergy across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut.
