The Government of Maharashtra has appointed MMRDA as the nodal agency for developing the Dharavi Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH), a major step toward integrated mobility. The project will connect metro, rail, airport, and bus services while promoting urban transit transformation. MMRDA will commence with a feasibility study for structured development.
Introduction:
In a strategic move towards Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been officially appointed as the Nodal Agency for conceptualising and developing the Dharavi Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH). The appointment was formalised through a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Government of Maharashtra on June 18, 2025.
This decision places MMRDA at the lead position of a massive effort to integrate multiple modes of transport in the centre of Mumbai. The Dharavi MMTH is seen as a strategic area connecting suburban railways, metro corridors, bus networks, and airports, while also growing economic and urban transformation in the Dharavi region.
Proposed Scope and Connectivity Plan:
The preliminary scope of the Dharavi MMTH showcases an ambitious effort to ensure multi-layered connectivity. Main components include-
- Rail Integration with nearby suburban stations: Mahim, Sion, and Chunabhatti
- Metro Connectivity with Lines 2B, 3, 8, and 11
- Airport Linkages to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)
- Bullet Train Access via BKC High-Speed Rail Station (NHSRCL)
- BKC Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system extension to serve both BKC and Dharavi
- Development of a 24×7 mixed-use urban hub with facilities like-
-
- Retail and commercial complexes
- Business offices
- Hotels and convention centres
- Restaurants and cafes
This development aims to make Dharavi a globally recognisable mobility hub, while also improving lifestyle and economic prospects in the region.
MMRDA to Initiate Feasibility Study:
The first step in this extensive undertaking will be the appointment of a professional agency to conduct a feasibility study and prepare the detailed structuring of the MMTH project. This study will lay the foundation for a comprehensive and scalable development model, ensuring the project aligns with future transport needs and urban expansion.
Insight:
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, “This Multi-Modal Transit Hub is not just a transport integration project—it is a vision for inclusive urban transformation. We are committed to developing a sustainable, future-ready node that connects people, services, and opportunities seamlessly. After completing the feasibility study, MMRDA will propose a comprehensive implementation plan to ensure maximum modal integration and urban impact.”
Conclusion:
The Dharavi MMTH is expected to serve as a foundation of Mumbai’s mobility transformation, unveiling new pathways for connectivity, urban regeneration, and socio-economic growth. With MMRDA leading the charge, the project was expected to make Dharavi a key gateway in Mumbai’s journey toward becoming a globally connected metropolis.
