Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has won a Rs. 178.64 crore contract from IRCON International Limited to execute comprehensive signalling and telecommunications works in the sections of South East Central Railway. The project involves electronic interlocking at 10 new stations, installation of six IBSs, and modern communication systems. The project is scheduled to be completed within an 11 month time period.
Introduction:
In a major stride towards railway infrastructure development, IRCON International Limited has awarded a significant contract to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). The Rs. 178.64 crore project focuses on upgrading signalling, telecommunications, and electronic interlocking (EI) systems across the Gevra Road–Pendra Road section. With an execution timeline of 11 months including the monsoon period, this initiative is poised to strengthen operational efficiency and safety in one of the critical coal transportation regions.
Scope of the Project:
- Electronic Interlocking Systems: Installation, testing, and commissioning of distributed/centralised electronic interlocking at 10 new stations: Surakachhar, Block Cabin, Katghora Road, Bhingra, Putuwa, Matin, Sendurgarh, Putipakhana, Dhangawan, and Bhadi.
- Intermediate Block Signalling (IBS): Setting up six new IBSs in sections: Bhingra–Putuwa, Putuwa–Matin, Sendurgarh–Putipakhana, Putipakhana–Bhadi, Bhadi–Dhangawan, and Dhangawan–Pendra Road.
- Control & Communication Systems: Installation and commissioning of a new Section Control System, including Headquarters and Wayside Train Control Communication Equipment, to improve coordination and reliability.
- Telecom & Exchanges: Commissioning of new telephone exchanges and Electronic In-Motion Weigh Bridges (EIMWBs) at strategic points for streamlined railway operations.
- Alterations in Existing Systems: Modifications to the Panel Interlocking installation at Kusmunda Block Station (KBS) yard and the Electronic Interlocking at East Cabin of SECL SILO Siding (KMKA) yard, ensuring smooth integration with the new systems.
Strategic Importance:
This project aligns with Indian Railways’ vision of modernization through automation and digitalization of signalling and telecommunications. The Gevra Road–Pendra Road section is strategically vital due to its proximity to coalfields, where efficient freight movement is critical for energy supply chains.
- Enhanced signalling infrastructure will:
- Improve safety and operational reliability.
- Minimize delays and human errors through automation.
- Support higher line capacity for freight movement.
- Strengthen communication for seamless train operations.
Financial and Execution Details:
- Contract Value: Rs. 178.64 crore (approx.)
- Execution Period: 11 months, inclusive of monsoon season
- Awarded by: IRCON International Limited
- Executing Agency: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL)
Conclusion:
The awarding of this contract to RVNL marks a major step towards modernizing signalling and telecom systems in India’s critical railway corridors.
