The Telangana Government has officially submitted the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2(B) proposal to the Government of India. A strategic move to accelerate urban transport infrastructure in the state. The expansion proposal includes three corridors spanning 86.1 km, the expected cost of the project will be Rs. 19,579 crore. This initiative will accelerate the regional connectivity, minimise road congestion and promote sustainable transport, all together it will transform the transport infrastructure of Hyderabad.
Introduction:
As part of a strategic move towards sustainable transport infrastructure, the Telangana Government has submitted the comprehensive proposal for Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2(B) to the Government of India on 21st June 2025. The state cabinet already approved the project, showing the states’s focus on boosting the sustainable transit solutions.
Three High-Impact Corridors Proposed:
Phase 2(B) consists of construction of three major metro corridors that will span across 86.1 km. The corridors were designed to serve the congested areas and industrial hubs, it will decongest the roads and enhance seamless connectivity in the area.
- RGIA (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport) to Bharat Future City – 39.6 km

- Aimed at boosting connectivity to Hyderabad’s key economic and tech zones.

- JBS (Jubilee Bus Station) to Medchal – 24.5 km

- Expected to ease travel from the northern suburbs and reduce road traffic.

- JBS to Shamirpet – 22 km

- Estimated Cost: Rs. 5,465 crore
- Targets connectivity to institutional and research zones, including the Genome Valley.
Strategic Investment Model:
With a total investment outlay of Rs. 19,579 crore, the Phase 2(B) project will be developed under a Joint Venture model, involving multiple financing sources-
- Telangana Government Contribution: Rs. 5,874 crore (30%)
- Government of India Share: Rs. 3,524 crore (18%)
- International Debt Funding: Rs. 9,398 crore (48%)
- Public-Private Partnership (PPP): Rs. 783 crore (4%)
This calculative funding approach shows the state’s strategic planning and its effort to involve central and global stakeholders in the region’s development.
Boosting Metro Vision Beyond Phase 2(A):
After Hyderabad Metro Phase 2(A) success, the state immediately focussed on Phase 2(B) to boost regional connectivity and reduce congestion. Phase 2(A) which already improved the city’s transit infrastructure, now phase 2(B) builds on that momentum, expanding the city’s metro footprint and progressing the Telangana government’s long-term goal for sustainable and future-proof urban transportation.
The proposed corridors are expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, cut down carbon emissions, and improve access to emerging economic zones, research hubs, and residential clusters. It also reflects the government’s push toward smart mobility that aligns with India’s climate goals and smart city initiatives.
