DFCCIL MD Shri Praveen Kumar inaugurates Top of Rail Friction Management Solution for freight corridors

Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL) has launched “Top of Rail Friction Management Solution” to improve train performance, reduce rail wear, and enhance energy efficiency. The initiative, inaugurated by Shri Praveen Kumar, MD, DFCCIL, is a significant milestone towards modernization of freight movement infrastructure in India.

Introduction:

In a significant advancement for the Indian railway freight corridors, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has officially launched the country’s first Top of Rail Friction Management Solution. The cutting-edge solution was inaugurated by Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL in presence of several senior officials and dignitaries.

This pioneering step showcases DFCCIL’s continuous commitment to bringing advanced, technology-driven solutions to India’s growing freight rail network — especially on the high-capacity Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors.

Leadership Presence and Inauguration Ceremony:

The inauguration ceremony was witnessed by several key officials of DFCCIL, including:

  • Shri Pankaj Saxena – Director/Project Planning
  • Shri Anurag Sharma – Director/Infrastructure
  • Shri G. D. Bhagwani – Executive Director/Asset Management
  • Shri Rakesh Kumar Gupta – Group General Manager/Track
  • Shri Anurag Yadav – General Manager Coordination/Noida

Representatives from global rail technology partner LORAM and implementation partner Vandhana International were also present at the launch event.

What is the Top of Rail Friction Management Solution?

The Top of Rail (ToR) Friction Management System is a cutting-edge railway technology used to apply a specially formulated friction modifier directly onto the top surface of rails. This reduces the coefficient of friction between the train wheels and rail track, offering multiple benefits:

  • Reduced Rail and Wheel Wear: Minimizes surface damage and extends asset lifespan
  • Energy Efficiency: Leads to lower traction energy requirements
  • Noise Reduction: Decreases operational noise during train movement
  • Improved Safety and Performance: Enhances braking and traction conditions for heavy freight trains

Benefits for Dedicated Freight Corridors:

Given that DFCCIL operates one of the most significant freight corridors globally, the deployment of this system is expected to yield transformative benefits:

  • Optimized train handling across long stretches
  • Decreased maintenance costs of rail assets
  • Enhanced reliability for time-sensitive freight
  • Improved sustainability through energy conservation

This system aligns with DFCCIL’s long-term strategy of integrating smart and sustainable solutions into its operations, reinforcing India’s goal of building next-generation transport infrastructure.

Another milestone achieved by DFCCIL:

Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of DFCCIL, inaugurated the New Sanjali Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal in Gujarat — the first such terminal developed on private land under Schedule 1 of the Gati Shakti Policy. Situated on the Western DFC, the facility showcases a significant push for private sector participation in modern freight infrastructure.

Developed in partnership with the Saawariya Group, the terminal will serve as a high-capacity, multimodal logistics hub. It promises faster cargo movement, seamless modal integration, and enhanced energy efficiency, in alignment with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The inauguration was attended by senior DFCCIL officials, Indian Railways, and private stakeholders.

Conclusion:

The launch of India’s first Top of Rail Friction Management System is a significant stride in advancing freight rail operations. By enhancing efficiency, increasing wear resistance and enhancing train performance, DFCCIL sets a benchmark for innovation-driven infrastructure modernization, supporting India’s logistics and freight growth goals in the coming years.
