DEC-HG Infra JV wins Rs. 2,196 crore contract for the redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station

D.E.C. Infrastructure and H.G. Infra Engineering have emerged as the lowest bidders for the Rs. 2,195.68 crore New Delhi Railway Station redevelopment project. Awarded by RLDA, the EPC-mode project will modernize the iconic station, integrate multi-modal transport, and promote Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), transforming it into a world-class transportation hub over 45 months.

Significance of New Delhi Railway Station:

  • Among the busiest railway stations in India, serving millions annually.
  • Strategically located near Connaught Place, a major commercial hub.
  • A key multi-modal transport node with metro, airport express, and bus connectivity.

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Commercial Potential:

  • First Delhi project based on TOD principles, allowing a higher Floor Space Index (FSI) of 1.2 million sqm.
  • Includes significant commercial and residential components, ensuring multiple revenue streams.
  • Provides lucrative business opportunities for the concessionaire.

Integrated Multi-Modal Connectivity:

  • Direct Airport Express Line connectivity to IGI Airport.
  • Metro (Yellow Line) linking Delhi NCR.
  • DTC bus services on both sides of the station.
  • Walking distance from Connaught Place.

Background & Challenges:

The redevelopment aligns with the Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to modernize stations nationwide. However, station redevelopment involves complexities such as obtaining statutory clearances (fire, heritage, environmental), addressing brownfield challenges (utility shifting, train operations, power lines), and maintaining seamless passenger movement, which can impact project timelines.

Conclusion:

The New Delhi Railway Station redevelopment project is a landmark initiative that will enhance urban mobility, boost economic growth, and set new standards in railway infrastructure. With its Transit-Oriented Development approach and seamless multimodal integration, the project by D.E.C. Infrastructure (51%) & H.G. Infra (49%) is poised to transform the station into a world-class, future-ready transportation hub.
