Mumbai Metro’s Lines 2B and 9 have entered the final phase of safety inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). With trials successfully completed, this significant regulatory step covers signalling, OHE, tracks, and civil infrastructure. Both the lines are expected to be operational by December 2025.
Introduction:
Marking a pivotal move towards advancing Mumbai’s public transportation network, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has commenced critical safety inspections on Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9. This vital regulatory step comes after successful completion of trial runs and is considered one of the final milestones before passenger services can start. The inspections cover aspects such as signalling systems, overhead electrification (OHE), tracks, and civil engineering works.
Both Line 2B and Line 9 are crucial components of Mumbai’s metro master plan aimed at reducing congestion and minimising travel time across key business, commercial, and residential corridors in the city. If all approvals go smoothly, the lines are set to become operational by December 2025.
Key Details of Phase 1:
- Metro Line 2B Phase 1: 5.5 km stretch covering 5 stations
- Metro Line 9 Phase 1: 4.5 km stretch covering 4 stations
- Trial runs: Completed successfully
Mumbai Metro Line 2B – An Urban Game-Changer:
Metro Line 2B, stretching from D.N. Nagar to Mandale, spans 23.643 km as an elevated corridor housing 20 strategically located stations. This line plays an important role in interconnecting major transport routes, including the Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, and several existing and upcoming metro corridors like Metro Line 1, Line 2A, Line 3, and Line 4.
One of the vital features of Line 2B is the dedicated Mandale depot, under development on 31.4 hectares of land. The project will significantly reduce travel time—by as much as 50% to 75%—depending on traffic conditions. This corridor also aims to provide rail-based connectivity to crucial commercial hubs, government institutions, and landmark areas of Mumbai.
Mumbai Metro Line 9 – Connecting Mira-Bhayander to the Heart of Mumbai:
Metro Line 9 is an extension of Metro Line 7 and will connect Dahisar to Mira Bhayander while also providing a seamless connection to Andheri and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA). The total length of the line is 13.581 km, comprising 11.386 km elevated and 2.195 km underground sections, served by 10 metro stations.
This extension offers direct interconnectivity with key infrastructures like the Western Express Highway, Western Railway, and the under-construction Metro Line 2A and Line 7. The project is designed to dramatically minimise commuting times and support economic activity by improving access to business and administrative zones.
Conclusion:
With CMRS inspections underway, the commissioning of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9 is on track for a December 2025 launch. These corridors will not only minimise travel time but also significantly enhance interconnectivity across the city. Their completion marks a major step forward in Mumbai’s urban transit transformation.
