CMRL awards Rs. 2.2 crore contracts to Balaji Railroad Systems for detailed feasibility reports of three RRTS corridors in Tamil Nadu

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded contracts worth over Rs. 2.2 crore for preparation of Detailed Feasibility Reports (DFRs) for proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors in Tamil Nadu to Balaji Railroad Systems (BARSYL). The corridors span across key cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Salem, and Villupuram, the RRTS network will accelerate regional connectivity in the state.

Introduction:

In a major boost to regional connectivity in Tami Nadu, CMRL has assigned three consultancy contracts to Balaji Railroad Systems Limited (BARSYL) for the preparation of DFRs on the three key RRTS corridor. The aim of the corridors are to improve the transit system in the state, enhance interconnectivity and provide semi high-speed transport for the commuters.

The DFRs contracts worth Rs. 2.22 crore represents the CMRL’s continuous effort to build an impeccable regional rail network. The three corridors proposed for the RRTS network are:

Chennai – Chengalpattu – Tindivanam – Villupuram RRTS Corridor:

  • Contract Value: Rs. 74,78,800
  • This corridor will link the southern sections of Chennai to interior regions like Villupuram via Chengalpattu and Tindivanam.
  • The route is poised to serve as a critical commuter and regional connectivity, significantly decongesting existing roads and traditional railways.
  • The corridor also holds strategic value in linking emerging industrial zones and Tier-2 towns to the Chennai Metropolitan Region.

Chennai – Kanchipuram – Vellore RRTS Corridor:

  • Contract Value: Rs. 72,88,000
  • This corridor will link Chennai with the culturally and commercially vital cities of Kanchipuram and Vellore.
  • With the growing traffic and development in the southwestern direction from Chennai, this corridor will bring a fast, efficient alternative to road travel.
  • It is likely to support economic integration, education hubs, and medical tourism in the region.

Coimbatore – Tirupur – Erode – Salem RRTS Corridor:

  • Contract Value: Rs. 74,78,800
  • This proposed line in western Tamil Nadu will connect major textile, manufacturing, and logistics hubs like Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode with Salem.
  • The region is one of the most industrialised zones in the state and a dedicated high-speed corridor will potentially improve freight and passenger movement.

Objective and Significance:

The feasibility studies will assess the financial, technical, and operational possibility of deploying RRTS in the proposed corridors. The DFRs will consist of environmental impact assessments, demand forecasting, route alignment, station locations, and preliminary cost estimates. These detailed feasibility reports will be the backbone of the project execution as building a transit network needs a lot of technical assessment.

Conclusion:

The consultancy order to Balaji reflects the CMRL’s commitment to improve regional transit connectivity across Tamil Nadu. The project aims to bring a smart, inclusive, and sustainable transit network, it will accelerate the connectivity as well as improve socio-economic development in the state.
