Blue Star bags railway electrification contracts for Jaipur and Chennai divisions

Blue Star Limited has bagged two significant railway electrification projects—Dausa–Gangapur City in Rajasthan and Chennai–Gudur in Tamil Nadu. These contracts mark a key milestone in India’s railway electrification journey, strengthening Blue Star’s role in infrastructure development and reinforcing its commitment to supporting sustainable and energy-efficient transportation.

Introduction:

Blue Star Limited, a renowned Indian engineering and infrastructure company, has been awarded two major contracts in the railway electrification sector. The awarded routes—Dausa to Gangapur City and Chennai to Gudur—are critical links in India’s vast railway network and represent a step forward in the nation’s electrification and sustainability goals.

These projects form part of Indian Railways’ broader vision to fully electrify the network, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance efficiency across freight and passenger corridors.

Project 1- Dausa–Gangapur City Electrification:

The Dausa–Gangapur City section spans approximately 93 km and falls under the Jaipur Division of North Western Railway. The new line, commissioned in November 2021, is a key passenger and freight route in Rajasthan.

Key Highlights:

  • Route Length: 92.67 km (rounded to 93 km)
  • Commissioning Date: November 2021
  • Division: Jaipur Division, North Western Railway

The Jaipur Division is a vital passenger-earning region, with over 84.92% of its revenue coming from passenger services. It spans 128 stations and operates 146 trains daily, serving regions across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.

Commodities like cement, fertilizer, gypsum, and food grains are regularly transported across this line. Container freight also contributes significantly to the division’s revenue.

Jaipur station alone handles 35,000 passengers per day, and the division supports 14 computerized Passenger Reservation Centres. With over 12,000 staff, the electrification of this corridor adds further strength to its capacity and efficiency.

Project 2 – Chennai–Gudur Railway Line Electrification:

The Chennai–Gudur line is a key stretch on the Chennai–Kazipet Corridor and forms part of the Chennai Division under Southern Railway. Known for its high electrification coverage, this division is a flagship in Indian Railways’ electrification journey.

Key Highlights:

  • Division- Chennai Division, Southern Railway
  • Route Electrification Coverage- Over 98% (742 RKM and 2178 TKM)
  • Corridor- Chennai–Kazipet Corridor

The Chennai Division is historically one of the oldest electrified divisions in Indian Railways. It is managed by a robust electrical engineering setup, including-

  • 18 Overhead Equipment (OHE) Depots
  • 13 Power Supply Installations (PSI) Depots, including 11 Traction Substations
  • Centralized Remote Control Centre (RCC) in Chennai, which manages power supply across the network

The division ensures seamless power management, maintenance, and monitoring across the electrified rail sections, ensuring uninterrupted services and improved safety standards.

Reinforcing Blue Star’s Infrastructure Leadership:

These electrification projects not only reflect the growing capabilities of Indian engineering firms but also demonstrate Blue Star’s strategic role in India’s railway transformation. With these twin project wins, Blue Star has reiterated its commitment to delivering technically sound and timely infrastructure solutions that contribute to India’s green mobility vision.

Electrification reduces dependency on diesel-powered locomotives, cuts operational costs, and minimizes carbon emissions—key goals in India’s railway modernization plans.

Conclusion:

Blue Star’s dual electrification wins at Dausa–Gangapur City and Chennai–Gudur mark a crucial contribution to Indian Railways’ electrification drive. By modernizing vital rail corridors across North and South India, Blue Star is not only strengthening railway infrastructure but also powering India’s journey toward greener, more efficient rail transport.
