Interview Insights:

Rail Analysis: Please tell us about yourself and Mafex. Can you elaborate on your role in the Spanish rail industry with Mafex?

Mr. Pedro Fortea: I’m Pedro Fortea, the General Director of Mafex, which is the Spanish Rail Industry Association. Mafex was established in 2004, and today, we represent 119 companies from Spain, as well as multinational companies (MNCs) working within the Spanish market.

The companies that are members of Mafex are involved in all aspects of a rail project, including consultancy, construction, civil works, track material, rolling stock manufacturing, telecommunications, electrifications, and components. Any company providing services or manufacturing products related to the rail sector can be a member of our association. Our members represent 83% of total Spanish rail industry exports, and we have a presence in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Rail Analysis: What has Mafex been doing in India, and what role have Spanish companies played there?

Mr. Pedro Fortea: As Mafex, we have been involved in developing various business business connections within the Indian market for several years. Our role at Mafex is to link Indian entities and companies with the Spanish rail industry. From there, it’s the companies themselves that develop business opportunities and execute projects in the Indian market.

We have some companies with facilities in India, and many have been involved in different projects, particularly in urban and commuter transport. Some of these projects are well-known, such as the Delhi Metro, among others. Additionally, there are small and medium-sized companies that are also contributing to different projects or establishing facilities in India.

Rail Analysis: What brings you to InnoTrans, and what key areas are you focusing on this time?

Mr. Pedro Fortea: InnoTrans is a must-attend event. I’ve been coming to InnoTrans since 2002, and that year we started the Spanish Pavilion with eight companies. Now, we bring 10 times more – around 80 Spanish companies spread across various pavilions. It’s not about presenting something specific but about showcasing our capabilities globally. InnoTrans is the perfect platform for that, and it happens every two years.
