L&T secures Rs. 4,467 crore track contract for BKC–Zaroli section of Bullet train corridor

Larsen & Toubro Limited secured a substantial contract from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for designing, supplying, constructing, and commissioning track works for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project. The project worth over Rs. 4,467 crore, covers the double-line corridor from Bandra-Kurla Complex to Zaroli in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Introduction:

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has awarded a landmark contract to Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for track and track-related works of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, renowned as India’s Bullet Train initiative.

The order, worth Rs. 4,467.72 crore, is a vital move towards progressing India’s first high-speed rail corridor. The contract is part of the Package No. MAHSR-T-1 and has been agreed on a design-build lump sum basis, ensuring end-to-end responsibility for L&T.

Scope of Work:

  • Design, supply, and construction of track and track-related infrastructure.
  • Testing and commissioning of the double-line high-speed railway system.
  • Alignment from Mumbai Station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (MAHSR Km. 0.255) to Zaroli Village (MAHSR Km. 156.600), spanning both Maharashtra and Gujarat.

This section represents one of the most vital stretches of the project, laying the foundation for seamless high-speed connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Financial Details:

The contract value is structured as a multi-currency payment model:

  • Rs. 1,685.37 crore (Indian Rupees)
  • JPY 44.75 billion (Japanese Yen)
  • USD 28.34 million (US Dollars)

The combined financial structure underscores international collaboration, reflecting the Japanese financing framework supporting the MAHSR project.

Contract Period:

The project has been scheduled to be completed within 2,157 days, aligning with the broader execution timeline of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project.

Significance of the Contract:

  • Reinforces Execution Capabilities – Entrusting L&T with one of the most complex track packages showcases the firm’s intensive capabilities in large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Boost to High-Speed Rail Vision – The package will advance toward operationalizing India’s first bullet train corridor.
  • Regional Development – By covering two states, Maharashtra and Gujarat, the track enables economic opportunities, logistics efficiency, and better connectivity.
  • Technology Advancement – With global partners and advanced design methods, the project will bring international high-speed rail technology to Indian soil.

Broader Context:

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, spanning over 508 kilometers, is India’s flagship high-speed rail venture. After completion of the project, the corridor will minimise travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from 6–7 hours to about 2 hours, transforming intercity mobility and setting a record for future high-speed rail projects in India.

Conclusion:

The contract of track works to Larsen & Toubro is a significant step towards development of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. With international partnership, robust technology, and the country’s engineering capabilities coming together, the project is set to transform high-speed travel and boost regional development.
