The Union Cabinet has approved Pune Metro Phase-2, particularly from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi (Corridor 2B). The two corridors spanning 12.75 km with 13 new stations are the extension of the existing route—Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor. This project worth over Rs. 3,626 crore expansion will improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion and support multimodal transport across Pune.
Introduction:
In a major stride towards reinforcing Pune’s transit development, the cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2, comprising Corridor 2A (Vanaz to Chandani Chowk) and Corridor 2B (Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi). This initiative is a part of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi line under Phase-1, it will decongest major areas and accelerate the urban connectivity.

Key Highlights of the Project:
- Corridor Details- The two new corridors together span 12.75 km and include 13 metro stations.
- Corridor 2A: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
- Corridor 2B: Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi
- Cost and Timeline- With a total estimated value Rs. 3,626.24 crore, the investment will be shared equally between:
- Government of India
- Government of Maharashtra
- External bilateral/multilateral agencies
The project is expected to be completed within four years.
- Urban Planning Alignment- The project aligns with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will establish a continuous East–West Metro connection from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, accelerating commuter convenience across key residential, commercial, and institutional zones.
Strategic Integration and Benefits:
- Increase Public Transport Use- By linking suburban hubs like Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, the expansion aims to boost the metro’s modal share and daily ridership.
- Enable Seamless Multimodal Travel- The corridors will intersect at District Court Interchange Station, allowing passengers to switch between-
- Line-1: Nigdi–Katraj
- Line-3: Hinjewadi–District Court
- Integrate Intercity Bus Services- Plans include connecting buses from Mumbai and Bengaluru to Chandani Chowk, and from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar to Wagholi, creating a truly integrated transit hub.
- Reduce Congestion & Pollution- By reducing traffic from key routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, the metro expansion will support safer, faster, and more sustainable urban commuting.
Projected Ridership:
The corridors are expected to boost significant growth in metro usage-
- 2027: 0.96 lakh/day
- 2037: 2.01 lakh/day
- 2047: 2.87 lakh/day
- 2057: 3.49 lakh/day
Implementation and Progress:
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will lead the execution of civil, electrical and associated works related to the project. Topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy are already in progress, it shows the commitment of the team to enhance the urban transit infrastructure in the city.

The approval of Pune Metro’s Phase-2 expansion is an effort towards transforming the urban landscape of the city. This project will boost regional connectivity, improve intercity, and support a multimodal transport system, which in turn will accelerate economic opportunities in Pune.
