About Nagpur Metro Phase-2:
Nagpur Metro Phase-2 builds upon the successful completion of Phase-1, extending the network by 43.8 km through four important stretches of the two existing corridors:
- Khapri – MIDC ESR – 18.5 km
- Automotive Square – Kanhan River – 13 km
- Prajapati Nagar – Transport Nagar – 5.6 km
- Lokmanya Nagar – Hingna – 6.7 km
These expansions aim to serve satellite towns and critical employment zones that are currently underserved by high-capacity public transport.
Strategic Benefits and Connectivity Impact:
- Serving Over 10 Lakh People– Once operational, Phase-2 will directly benefit over a million residents living in outer zones and suburbs of Nagpur.
- Support for Industrial Zones– Butibori Industrial Estate, home to over 750 units and nearly 50,000 workers, will gain direct metro connectivity. Kapsi and Hingna, known for their industrial growth and transport activity, will have improved access.
- Ease for Daily Commuters– The Kanhan route passing through Kamptee, a town with thousands commuting daily to Nagpur, will offer fast, safe, and affordable transit solutions.
- Connectivity for Coalfields– Areas around Kanhan with operations of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) will also benefit from faster logistics and labor movement.
Project Cost and Funding:
The total estimated project cost is Rs 6,708 Crore, which will be shared 50% by GoI & and another 50% by GoM and debt will be secured from international funding agencies. This project will reinforce Maha-Metro’s commitment to modernizing transit infrastructure and enhancing commuters’ travel experience.
Conclusion:
Nagpur Metro’s Phase-2 Reach-3A is steadily advancing, laying the groundwork for future connectivity to industrial, residential, and transport hubs. With casting and foundation works underway, this progress promises to be a game-changer for over 10 lakh residents and thousands of daily commuters seeking faster, more reliable public transport.
