Hyderabad is prioritizing skywalk development to revolutionize pedestrian safety and reduce urban congestion. This initiative promises seamless last-mile connectivity to metro stations throughout the city. With active collaboration from private developers, the city is building a safer, smarter, and more sustainable pedestrian ecosystem. This initiative aligns with the long-term mobility and environmental goals of the city.
Introduction:
In a bold move to transform pedestrian movement, the Telangana government is accelerating the construction of skywalks across Hyderabad. This effort aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and curb air pollution by encouraging walking and metro travel.
Strategic Planning:
A recent Comprehensive Mobility Planning meeting chaired by HMRL MD Shri NVS Reddy and HMDA Commissioner Shri Sarfaraz Ahmed outlined the expansion of skywalks connecting metro stations with surrounding commercial hubs and residential neighborhoods.
Operational Skywalks:
- Punjagutta, Hitec City & Erramanzil – Built by L&T, these link metro stations to adjacent malls.
- JBS & Parade Ground – Provide safe elevated crossings.
- Rayadurg Metro Station – Connects directly to Mindspace IT Park.
- Uppal Metro Station – Features a circular skywalk linking all surrounding roads.
Ongoing & Planned Projects:
- Balanagar – Connecting to Phoenix/Landmark Mall.
- LB Nagar – Vasavi Group’s skywalk to a large residential complex.
- Planned Locations – Nagole, Stadium, Durgam Cheruvu, Kukatpally, and more.
Integration Across Metro Network:
The long-term goal includes integrating skywalks into all 57 stations of Hyderabad Metro Phase 1, offering uninterrupted pedestrian connectivity citywide.
Conclusion:
Hyderabad’s expanding skywalk initiative marks a critical step toward sustainable urban mobility. By linking metro stations with key destinations, the city ensures safer, more efficient movement for pedestrians. As public-private collaboration grows, the city is setting a national example in urban transport innovation and smart infrastructure planning.
