Kochi Metro awards Rs. 36 crore general consultancy contract to Systra for Phase-2 expansion

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has awarded a Rs. 36.32 crore contract to Systra as the General Consultant (GC) for Phase-II construction from JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad. Systra will oversee project execution, ensuring adherence to quality, timelines, and technical standards across civil, electrical, signaling, and system integration aspects.


Role of the General Consultant (GC):

Under this contract, KMRL will act as the “Engineer” and “Employer” for the project, while Systra, as the GC, will serve as the “Engineer’s Representative.” The primary responsibilities of the GC include ensuring project execution aligns with approved technical, financial, and contractual guidelines.

Systra’s key tasks involve:

  • Design Scrutiny & Compliance: Reviewing engineering designs, drawings, and proposals, ensuring adherence to industry standards and codes.
  • Construction Oversight: Supervising site work, monitoring schedules, and ensuring project milestones are met.
  • Project Coordination: Managing system integration, interface management, and coordination with contractors and consultants.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensuring execution meets required technical and safety standards.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Overseeing trials, approvals, and handing over the corridor to KMRL upon completion.

The GC will oversee the entire Phase-II development, covering:

  • Civil structures (viaducts, station buildings, and special spans)
  • Plumbing and E&M works
  • Track installation
  • Lifts & escalators
  • Signaling and telecommunication systems
  • Power traction and AFC (Automatic Fare Collection)
  • Air conditioning and ventilation
  • Renewable energy systems (solar integration)
  • Signage, wayfinding, and theming
  • Cybersecurity management
  • Non-motorized transport and junction improvements
